POC Engaging with Nature

Outdoor Education built by POC for POC

In the Spring of 2022, I launched the first iteration of P.E.N. (POC Engaging with Nature) with Dr. Jennifer Hunter at Hastings Natural History Reservation. The focus of P.E.N. is to create meaningful activities revolving around ecology to stimulate interest in the natural sciences for the respective community. Our first iteration of PEN was built for the youth in Cachagua in Carmel Valley, California and took place from May 28th - May31st 2022. We hope to continue to receive funding to make this annual as well as expand the program to the East Bay.

We had three primary instructors: (1) wildlife ecology, (2)
plant ecology/archeology, and (3) ornithology. Each instructor engaged participants in activities respective to their fields, including camera-trapping and bird-walks.

This iteration, we capped hosting capacity at 21 students. We hope to expand this program in the future to hold more participants!
