Outdoor Education
In the Spring of 2022, I launched the first iteration of P.E.N. (POC Engaging with Nature) with Dr. Jennifer Hunter at Hastings Natural History Reservation. The focus of P.E.N. is to create meaningful activities revolving around ecology to stimulate interest in the natural sciences for the respective community. The three iterations of PEN was built for the youth in Cachagua in Carmel Valley, California and took place on memorial day weekend in 2022, 2023, and 2024. We hope to continue to receive funding to make this annual as well as expand the program to the East Bay.
We had three primary instructors: (1) wildlife ecology, (2) plant ecology/archeology, and (3) ornithology. Each instructor engaged participants in activities respective to their fields, including camera-trapping and bird-walks.
We capped hosting capacity at ~21 students bot h years. We hope to expand this program to the Bay Area in the future!
